Turkish Gambit 6: The Turkish Gambit at Age 70!

This episode discusses why the name “Turkish Gambit” is used and examines a successful game by a 70-year-old player.

The naming debate

The video answers viewers who ask, “This gambit already has other names, so why call it the Turkish Gambit?” The gambit goes by many names: Elephant Gambit, Paulsen Counterattack, Englund Counterattack, Queen’s Pawn Counter-Gambit. According to the presenter, an opening’s name is shaped by the sources that bring it into the literature and by how often players in a region use it; in the internet age amateurs take part in that process too (0:47, 3:10).

Fernandes’ game

In a 2010 game suggested by a follower, S. Naldo Fernandes (2000) plays Black at the age of 70 against a 2181-rated opponent (5:08). See the video for how the game unfolds and its result.
