Turkish Gambit 2: What Happens When You Play the Turkish Gambit Against Tal?

This episode examines the Turkish Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5) through two historic games, showing that it is not only a surprise weapon for amateurs but can trouble world champions too.

Tal – Freidl

Mikhail Tal played 3.exd5 as White and Alfred Freidl answered with the typical 3...d4. Tal made unusual moves such as retreating his queen to e2, while Black kept developing and reached a solid position. Freidl’s threats against the queen and a tactical attack pushed White onto the defensive, and the game ended in a draw.

Bronstein with Black

In the second game David Bronstein plays the Turkish Gambit as Black. His moves are aggressive and true to the spirit of the gambit; against White’s 4.d4 he chooses developing moves that protect the pawn structure. Watch the video for the rest of the game.
