This Satranç Okulu video looks at the Turkish Gambit’s popularity, its statistical success and how it has spread around the world.
Introduction and collaborations
Selim Gürcan says he made the video because of the strong interest in the gambit. It mentions an entertaining game from the Satranç Dünyam channel in which FM Yasin Emrah Yağız plays the gambit; although not fully prepared for the opening, Yağız manages to trouble his opponent with it (0:00–1:43).
International spread
The video highlights Özgün Yalçın’s English-language explanation of the Turkish Gambit on the Özgün Satranç channel, stressing how important such English sources are for the name “Turkish Gambit” to be accepted in global chess literature (1:43–4:18).
Statistics
In the large Lichess data set, 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d5 looks quite competitive for Black; win rates that used to be around 47%–47% changed with Turkish players’ interest (4:18–6:33). See the video for the exact figures.
