Leyla Tal at the World Team Championship: Evren Ucok's Double Rook Sacrifice

In this video from the Satranç Okulu channel, the team captain walks through a spectacular game played at the FIDE World Rapid Team Championship in London. Evren Ucok, the founder of the Generation XYZA team and a supporter of Ediz, Yağız, Atilla, Şehriyar and many other young stars, won it with a pair of rook sacrifices.

The Event

Generation XYZA started the World Rapid Team Championship ranked 13th and finished 8th, which the captain notes was achieved in a relaxed tournament with no stress. Ucok played on the last board, while Şehriyar, Ediz, Yağız, Atilla and Nurgül were seated side by side, and the captain admits he watched this game with great excitement because every game can decide the fate of a match. Ucok said it was the first time in 35 years that he contributed to a world championship team result.

His opponent was Mikey J Watson (1914) of the Rookies team. The video is in Turkish; YouTube offers English subtitles through automatic translation, which works reasonably well.

The Game in Brief

Ucok opened with 1.Nf3, steering into an English Opening that needs little theory. After both sides castled and exchanged a pair of knights, Black played ...e5 to stop a bishop trade. White answered with a wave of flank pawns: h4 and h5 on the kingside, then a4, a5 and a6 on the other wing. The a6 pawn looked harmless, but the captain stresses it was a future queen.

Then came the key moments. With about 5:50 on his clock, Ucok spent roughly 20 seconds on 25.Rxh7!!. After 25...Rxh7 26.Rxh7 Black avoided the capture on h7 and played 26...Rf8, only to meet 27.Rh8+!!, a second rook that cannot be refused. The king had to take, and after 28.Qxf8+ Kh7 29.Qf7+ Kh6 30.Bxe5 White picked up the a7 pawn, and the a-pawn promoted on move 34. Black resigned.

A Nickname and a Funny Anecdote

After this game Ucok jokingly nicknamed himself "Leyla Tal", a playful way of calling himself a distant cousin of the legendary attacker Tal, which is also the video's title. The captain says that when he saw the rook sacrifice so early in the game, he was not sure at first whether Ucok had miscalculated, but the engine showed a forced attack.

The video ends with a light-hearted story: right after the game, Ucok went with the captain to watch Ediz's game. When Ediz accidentally knocked over a glass of water, Ucok threw his cashmere garment onto the spill. With a joke, the captain says this saved the team by keeping everyone's attention from wandering. Next on the calendar is the World Blitz Championship, where the team is even more ambitious with its young players.
